Dr. Fousiya Yoonus is a bilingual writer, churning out compositions in English and Malayalam, poetry being her main forte. She became the youngest English poet of India with the publication of her maiden collection of poems, ‘Through the Open Window’. Her other anthologies comprise ‘Buds to Blossoms’, ‘Puzhayude Sangeetham’, ‘For a Different World’
and ‘Manipal Blooms’. Her poems have garnered appreciation from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the then Hon’ble President of India and Shri. R.L. Bhatia, the then Governor of Kerala among
several notable dignitaries, and received the acclaim of critics and media. Her poems have also been translated to other regional languages. She was the first child writer to be nominated to the Advisory Council of the Kerala State Central
Library. She has been bestowed with several accolades including the National Youth award of the Government of India (2006-’07), the Children’s Literary Award (2003) of the Government of Kerala, the maiden ‘Madhavikkutty award’ of the Kamala Das foundation, in memory of the venerable poet,
the Balaratna Award, Murasoli Maran Memorial Award prominent among them. She was chosen as a youth ambassador on a delegation to China, by the Government of India. She has dedicated herself to social service in her realm of activity, and served as the State Joint Secretary and the State President of the All Kerala Balajana Sakhyam, the largest children’s organization in Asia, spearheading innumerable social causes
under its aegis. She is the National President of ‘Prakrithi’, a youth initiative she founded to propagate awareness on environmental protection, global warming, and disaster
management. She also established twenty libraries in orphanages and cultural centres across various states, as part of the ‘Libraries for Hope’ project, a flagship venture of ‘Prakrithi’. She is a nephrologist by vocation, and is Assistant Professor in Nephrology at Government Medical College, Kottayam. She has notable academic publications to her credit,and was also a Tata Scholar during her MBBS tenure. She was mentioned as a role model for Indian youth in the Republic day speech of Governor Shri. R.L. Bhatia. She is the daughter of noted writer and former Kendra Sahitya Akademi member Dr. Kayamkulam Yoonus and Dr. A. Faseela Yoonus, former Superintendent of General hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. Her
husband, Dr. Mohsin Ali Wahab is Assistant Professor in Orthopaedics at Believer’s Church Medical College, Thiruvalla. They have a daughter, Aliza Mohsin. Her brother, Dr. Ashik
Yoonus is also a writer.
